Complete BWCA portage data available!
During the last few years I have hiked and tracked every BWCA canoe portage. I have collected the following data:
-
date and time it was mapped
-
duration of hiking time
-
distance
-
elevations
Data
The files are separated in to the Superior National Forest District in which they are located. Click here for a District Map. Files can be purchased as a district, or you can purchase the entire Boundary Waters Canoe Area canoe portages as a complete file!

Incorporating Data to your App
Once the data is purchased, an email will be sent to you where you can download the data, and then open it with the mapping app of your choice. There are a variety of map apps that offer different capabilities. Some great topographic apps include, Gaia GPS, OnX, Navionics, US Topo Maps, GPX Viewer, Google Earth, OsmAnd. If you plan to be in an area without cell service, make sure you can download the data to your phone/device so you can use it even when not connected to the internet. Follow the directions for your app to understand which file format is required to import the data. The maps are available in these formats:
-
GPX
-
KML
*GPX files are used for nearly all mobile device topographical apps. Google Earth on a computer will also display them, but not Google Earth on mobile devices. This is the most commonly used file extension.
*KML files are mainly used with Google Earth for mobile devices.
Which format should I download?
*Download the Sioux Hustler trail for free to try it out!
*All files are zipped when purchased.
*Files are for personal use and may not be sold, altered, or used commercially.
OsmAnd is the only app that I know of that allows you to download maps for offline use for free. However, this app doesn't show all the details for each individual portage. All the other apps appear to require a subscription or payment to do so.
